Rano RarakuYour location: Welcome! (Main page) / Rano Raraku
The crater of Rano Raraku in the southern tip of Easter Island is its most beautiful crater. It is filled with rain water and plantation. A dangerous site, don't attempt to climb, walk around it! There are spots from where you can admire the whole sight without putting your life in danger. In fact, the crater is located on the eastern slopes of the great Maunga Terevaka, the highest mountain of the island. On the outer belt of the crater there is a rock quarry, which offers splendid views to those who wander to this part of the island. Rano Raraku is on UNESCO's World Heritage List and is among Easter Island's top travel attractions. Rano Raraku is often misspelled "Rano Araku".
The quarry & the moai
The quarry was used for approximately 500 years, until the early 1700s. 95 % of the statues on the island were constructed from the rock extracted here. The view is beautiful, a great place to take photographs! There are 397 moai scattered around. There is also an incomplete moai in the quarry. Interestingly it looks like the craftsmen tried to putt it directly out of the crater's cliff. You can rent a bike or a scooter or even a car and get quite close to this place and then just walk around it. The volcano craterThe crater of Rano Raraku is steep in most places, except the in northern parts and in the northwest. Inside the crater you will find a freshwater body, one of the 3 lakes of the island. It can be beautiful to take photos here. Especially panoramic pictures. Location on the map
