Motu NuiYour location: Welcome! (Main page) / Motu Nui
The largest island off the coast of Easter Island. It was used for the "Bird Man" ("Tangata Manu") cult. Back in the past, brave young men used to swim to the isled to collect eggs and bring them back to the shore. The last known Bird Man Competition was held in 1888. The islet is is slightly white coloured on top, which is due to the bird droppings (guano). Interestingly this islet is the top of a huge volcanic mountain which lies on the ocean bed and measures over 2.000 m. On Motu Nui, 2 caves can be found, these were used centuries before when the Bird Man Competitions were held. Sometimes travelers are taken on short cruises with boats around the "motus".
